Improving the practice and performance of contemporary music

Section 2: pp

In the opening section, every cell is clearly built in an ascending or descending way. Starting from the dynamic pp, this changes to a more centrifugal approach of the series of intervals. This series is newly created with the pitches of the opening section as a panel. The succession is used throughout the following section of the composition. The melody still has an ascending tendency. Both the successions of intervals as well as the ascending tendency are techniques used to create the panels in the next section of the piece. The series of intervals is used and inverted. A filter that appears regularly in the works of Donatoni is applied to the rhythmic structure: the established material becomes fragmented by the continuous adding of (short) pauses between the notes of the succession. This technique appears in section 2 at the end of the second series of intervals and is continued until every note becomes an independent musical event.
